A great workman never credits or blames his tools for the quality of his work. However it always helps to have the right paint brushes to complete the job in front of you. So how do you choose the right brush for the job?

ANGLED VS. STRAIGHT BRUSHES

What is an angled brush? It’s a brush that has its bristles cut in an angle or slant. Use them to paint straight lines, edges or corners. NOW! Is it possible to paint straight lines, edges or corners with a regular straight brush? Believe it or not, it is. The internet has many videos of painters who rise to the challenge. But it is a skill earned over the years.

NATURAL VS. SYNTHETIC PAINT BRUSHES

The material used in the bristles of a paint brush is the first major factor in choosing one. There are two major categories found here: Natural Brushes and Synthetic Brushes. There is a third category which is a mix of Natural and Synthetic fibers.

Natural Brushes – Made from animal hair that comes from sables, squirrels, goats, hogs or badgers, these brushes are best for:

  • Oil-based paints;
  • Varnishes;
  • Shellac;
  • Enamel Top coat;
  • Polyurethane Top Coats;

Synthetic Brushes – Made from Nylon or polyester fibers, these brushes are best for:

  • Water-based paints,
  • Latex
  • Acrylic.

BRUSH SIZE

Select the brush that best works for what you are going to paint:

  • 1 to 2 inches are best for windows, trims and corners;
  • 3 inch brushes are best for doors, cabinets and shelves
  • 4 to 6 inch brushes are for large flat areas like walls and ceilings.
