These are the two most popular floor tiling options. Now before you wonder why we classified these two together, it’s because both Ceramic and Porcelain tiles are born of kiln dried molded clay. Both Porcelain and Ceramic tiles can also be glazed or un-glazed. Glazed tiles can have a matt, semi-gloss or gloss finish to them. Glazed ties are more scratch resistant, provide better traction and don’t absorb as much water as unglazed tiles.

The only difference between the two is that:

  • Porcelain tiles are mixed with Feldspar which catalyzes under the heat of the high heat of the kiln to create that “glassy” look that Porcelain tiles have.
  • Porcelain is naturally much more expensive than Ceramic tiles. BUT their colors are far more robust and vibrant, and they come with stain resistance, are far more durable and absorb less water than ceramic tiles. All of this combine to ensure that Porcelain tiles will outlast their Ceramic counterparts.
